The Organization for the development of scientific research in the field of philology and humanities Litera, in collaboration with the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, Branch in Niš, is organizing the 4th edition of a cycle titled "Art in Context". This year’s international symposium is dedicated to the treatment of nature in the works of art.
We live in times when it has become absolutely imperative that the natural environment be preserved and protected. American theorist Fredric Jameson refers to our age as the dusk of nature. Having ceased to dwell in the natural world, humankind needs to identify its new surroundings. Slavoj Žižek invites people to embrace garbage, for it is there that the contemporary world has begun to feel at home. Initially, environmental preservation was a task of natural sciences. It quickly became the subject of a study of social sciences and humanities as well, hence art itself. With the advent of ecocriticism in the early nineties, scholars showed growing interest in examining the various ways works of art treat the subject of nature and its function. The ecocritical approach particularly brought literature into sharp focus. The so-called eco-narratives were praised – the works in which nature appears in its own without being reduced to a mere function of another textual element. Many theorists point to literature as a means of raising people’s awareness and appealing to their conscience when it comes to reconsidering their relationship with the natural environment. We invite you to examine how nature is treated in literature, as well as in any other forms of art.
This year, our aim is to gather both PhD students and more experienced academics and researches in the field. Panel One will comprise master’s and PhD students, whereas Panel Two will be dedicated to holders of a doctoral degree.
The working languages of the conference are Serbian (and related languages – Croatian, Bosnian, and Montenegrin), Bulgarian, Macedonian, Polish, Czech, Slovak and English.
