The organization for the development of scientific research in the field of philology and humanities “Litera”, in collaboration with the Research Center of the Serbian Academy of Science and Arts and of the University of Niš, is organizing the 2nd International Symposium titled “Art in Context: Religion in Works of Art”. PhD students and young researches are invited to take part in the conference, which will be held on September 25, 2015 at the University of Niš (Room 8) at 10 AM.
Our aim is to host a group of young researches in the field of philology and other humanities who are interested in examining the religious motifs in art. It seems that certain relations between art and religion need to receive closer critical attention. What is the importance of religion in art? To what extent does religion exert influence on artistic production or vice versa – has art had (and how) any effects on religion? What is the author’s attitude towards religion – do they conform to, adapt, oppose or subvert a particular religious doctrine in their works? What is the position of religion in contemporary art? Does its role vary in different national literatures and literary traditions? How to critically approach a work of art from the religious point of view? Does religion in the works of the so-called “non-fantasy” fiction resemble existing religious dogmas? How is a religious creed built in fantasy works – does it draw on the elements of existing religions?
The contributors are invited to deliver a 15-minute presentation. Each session of three or four successive presentations is followed by a 30-minute discussion.
The working languages of the conference are: Serbian (and related languages – Croatian, Bosnian, Montenegrin), Bulgarian, Macedonian, Polish, Czech, Slovak and English.
The participants are invited to fill in and submit the application form by August 20, 2015, to [email protected]
The participants will receive a notification of acceptance together with the provisional program no later than September 10, 2015.
The participants are asked to send the final version of their papers, as well as the abstracts in Serbian and English, bibliography and key words, by the end of the year. Academic papers are then submitted for anonymous review before they are accepted in the conference proceedings (planned to be published in 2016). The conference proceedings will appear in electronic version and will be registered in the catalogue of the National Library of Serbia. Moreover, it will be categorized at the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development of the Republic of Serbia.
